 ELEUTHERA BONEFISHING

Bonefishing Eleuthera is an incredible experience, There are flats that are easily accessible and that you can drive a vehicle on. I saw a Bahamian riding a bicycle on Savannah Sound at low tide. There are flats on Cape Eleuthera that run for miles. At Seaside Beach in Alice Town I caught two bonefish with two girls sitting in the water thirty feet away. There were about twelve swimmers in the water and the bonefish were weaving in and out of them.

Then there is Savannah Sound, arguably the most esthetically pleasing flat on Eleuthera. The bonefishfish here are hit hard by fly fishermen because of the easy access and the consistent flow of bonefish. If you are planning on fishing the sound and find five bone fishermen there, it is probably wise to move on to another location. The bonefish there are educated and weary of fly fishermen and all you will do is spook them. The ecosystem is delicate and although it is a large sound, five fishermen is about the maximum it can manage. Fish it after April and you will probably be the only angler out there.
Please respect  the fact that Savannah Sound can only support five bone fishermen at a time.

If anything about Eleuthera flats fishing stands out, it is that none of the sounds, creeks, beaches or flats are predictable as far as  bonefish always being there. just because I show up. In May last year we went by boat to the the flat in front of the north end of the runway at Governor's Harbor Airport. We staked out in ten inches of water and in thirty-five minutes about two hundred bonefish went by. I have fished there several times since then and not seen that happen again.

In Governor's Harbor, in front of Haynes Library, there is a school of resident bonefish that more than likely, have all been caught a few times. They don't seem to mind.

In Half Sound there are almost always a number of good sized bonefish around. Access is a little rough and it requires a stout vehicle to get to some areas.

Deep Creek is an outstanding place for bonefish. Deep Creek is difficult to wade in places, because of the bottom configuration, it has mounds that make wading kind of sloppy. However, there are some serious bonefish in Deep Creek and wading there is worth the effort.

There are bonefish from Harbor Island and Spanish Wells in the north, to Cape Eleuthera and Bannerman Town in the south and everywhere in between... at times. Three anglers from the states, fished Governor's Harbor in torrential rain and caught bonefish.

Eleuther is a large island to negotiate, 115 miles long and requires some driving, but it is worth the effort. Somewhere on this island, on any given day, is a place to bonefish, no matter what the wind is doing. Somewhere the tide is right, the bones are feeding and a first rate fly fishing experience can happen.
