THE BONEFISH CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
South Andros Island is widely known as the Bonefishing Capital of the World. With the island’s endless, diverse flats, the opportunities are boundless. You want to fish to giant schools of hungry bonefish? No problem. Have your sights set on casting to large tailing bones? We can make it happen.
Expect to fish to schools of bonefish that average 2 to 4 pounds, with larger fish often swimming with the school. You will also have many shots at tailing and cruising bonefish ranging from 5 to 10 pounds plus. These opportunities will come while wading hard sand and marl flats or being poled along in one of our fully equipped flats skiffs. We’re not big on keeping score, but expect some days where you lose count of the number of bones you hook and land.

Most of your encounters with bonefish will be on extensive shallow flats or winding mangrove creeks in 1 to 2 feet of water. The fish will often be moving quickly on the tide and grubbing as they go looking for shrimp, crabs, worms, shellfish, baitfish and small invertebrates. A bonefish’s mouth, unlike that of most other gamefish, is located underneath the head, enabling the fish to easily root around the bottom for food. While you will often see (and cast to) larger schools of relatively easy-to-catch fish, the bruisers will often be traveling in singles or pairs and they offer some of our more challenging fishing.
Since bonefishing is often viewed as a combination of fishing and hunting, it is important that you stay alert and watchful for inbound fish. Your guide will put you on the ‘clock’ system to guide your shots at the fish – meaning that if he says look to 1 o’clock at forty feet, that’s where your cast needs to be, pronto!
If at all possible, attempt to spot the fish prior to laying down your cast. You will need to lead the fish a bit as bonefish can easily spook if you ‘line’ them or plunk a fly right on their heads. Bonefish can be nervous critters (as everything considers them a delightful meal) and learning to spot the fish, even with your guide’s assistance, will greatly enhance your success rate in hooking up.

Regardless of your experience level, it is our goal to make every trip to Andros South a trip of a lifetime. For anglers from novice to expert, our expert staff and extremely diverse fishery allow you to experience a trip that exceeds your expectations.

When you look at a map of South Andros Island, you realize that the majority of our island is comprised of bonefish habitat – dry on a low tide, wet on a high tide, covered with mangroves and rich with nutrients regardless.
There’s a whole lot of water in the middle of South Andros that you can only get to on foot. Those east side creeks that we’ve written about connect eventually to the flats in The West and The South. These creek systems are vast and complex, and extremely shallow. As you head inland, there are some huge, complicated systems of creeks, ponds and lakes that are flooded on a high tide (which means bonefish eat there), but that, due to mangroves or just shallow water, aren’t accessible by boat. How, you might ask, do we get to these flats? We walk. We can glide through shallow water, or just tromp through the mangroves, to get to some gigantic systems of inland flats that are just stuffed with bonefish. Depending on the tides, we might even encounter some very large schools of bones that are literally landlocked, waiting for the next high tide.
Depending on your interest, your fitness level, and the number of rum and tonics that you enjoyed the previous night at The Slack Tide, you can walk with our guides for an hour or a day to have a look at these inland flats.
Sometimes the fishing on these inland flats is mind-numbingly easy – if you encounter a big school of fish that’s land-locked and hungry, you’re about to get very familiar with your backing. Sometimes, due to the extremely shallow water that we encounter inland, the fish can be a little twitchy and hard to feed – as you would be if your back was literally out of the water.

While Andros is regarded as the Bonefishing Capital of the World, Andros South is excited to offer a blue water fishing program that allows guests to sample the great fishing available in the Tongue of the Ocean, one of the worlds’ most extraordinary deep water trenches, just to the east of South Andros Island. Depending on the season, dorado, tuna, wahoo, king mackerel, ocean barracuda, sharks sailfish, marlin and other species are available.
Anglers use a variety of techniques, including fly fishing, using live bait on spinning gear, and trolling. Bottom fishing for snapper and grouper can also be a great option. The fishing platforms is a 25-foot power catamaran captained by Rosewell Rahming, an experienced local captain. There is an additional charge for each day of blue water fishing.
