Bonefish are crafty, aware and vastly skilled at living in close proximity to their predators. At times, bonefishing will require from an angler, about all of the fly fishing skills they possess. A well known South Andros guide, Captain Tee, told me to move like a Ninja. Frequently, it is more productive to not move at all and let the bonefish come to you.
If you are new to bonefishing, this sounds like a tall order, however there is a flip side. i was working a school of bones on Eleuthera, at Seaside Beach and about a dozen locals came along and went in swimming. The bonefish didn't seem to mind. I caught one, with two girls sitting in the water, not thirty feet away. I released that bonefish, made another cast into the school and hooked up again. I stopped fishing because of concern that my backcast might hit somebody. As i was leaving the water I saw a bonefish weaving along the tideline, between the feet of the people coming in to swim. The bonefish at the bottom of this page, was five feet away when I took that photograph. He was looking right at me and did not perceive me as a threat. Bonefish understand when they are being hunted.
The most expedient way to get up to speed on bonefishing, is to fish at one of the Bahamas Bonefish Lodges or with one of the Bahamas Bonefishing Guides. The lodges and guides have years of experience under their belts and can spare an angler a lot of "knocking around"
time and blank days on the flats.
